This is Monotone.

Monotone is a simple yet dynamic theme for photo-blogging. The layout is clean and non-intrusive, but the way it handles images makes each entry unique (and requires no intervention to do so).

You can now use it on self-hosted blogs too (download here).

Monotone takes the first image attached to a post and samples colors from it for use in the surrounding layout.

Each post needs to contain one image, and optionally, any text you want. The theme does the rest, pulling colors out of and resizing the images for use in the design.

You can use the visual or the HTML editor in wordpress to input your image and supporting text.

Enjoy Monotone, and please, let us know what you think!

Monotone was a collaboration between eight6 and Automattic.

  7. very simple, yet sophisticated, Thanks !!

  8. It’s a great theme, but I’m not sure I like how it resizes images. It will shrink an 800×532 image to a smaller size to fit, but it will post an 800×560 image full size. Why the difference?

  9. Seems nice but might need an extra column on a side for other info.

  10. I like it!
    Putting this to use today.

  12. hawt. I think this would be great if I had some applicable content!

  13. looking good
may very well give it a test run with some of my pics and see how it handles them :-)

  14. Wow, this is really beautiful. I´going to try out this theme soon :D

  15. Seems pretty.

    :)

  16. thank you. great, clean design…. have been trying different ways with my shadow picture site ( http://www.constantcompanion.wordpress.com ) and all that struggle….. and you found a much better solution…
    thank you.

  17. Any chance of using a method other than url_fopen() to grab the files? Some shared hosts (Dreamhost, for one) disable it and thus the niftiness of the auto-color-match just doesn’t work, plain and simple.

Could it fall back to a filesystem call if allow_url_fopen is false? Come to think of it, why are you incurring the http overhead in the first place, rather than calling out to the filesystem?

  18. I love the idea behind it :)

  19. The theme is great! The only problems I have with it are that it needs to be widget-aware and the sidebars are really bright and distracting from the images. Other than that, excellent work. Keep it up!

  20. What a really nice theme, a little slow sometimes though. I might have to start putting up aphotoblog my self now. GoldCoaster

  21. la verdad es que esta muy wapo si

  22. Hi. One issue that I’m seeing is that any other photographs in my post are now not showing. Moirae Knitting: http://threefates.wordpress.com.

  23. I’m using Firefox by the way. Another issue is that the color is switching until after the page is refreshed a second time.

  24. i love this theme — but just one question — is it possible to allow video embedding?

  25. Thanks, great addition to worpress. I’ve started mine, the only problem is how do I get rid of: ‘Just another WordPress.com’ weblog at the top, where the blog tile is. I don’t see this written on the demo.
    Si esta guapisimo, muy bueno

  26. I am _so_ loving this theme, and am using it on my photoblog. LOVE the theme. It’s the first photoblog theme that really feels “right” and complete.

Any chance of rolling in EXIF display, so we could show the key metadata about a photo? (focal length, aperture, ISO, exposure)

  28. Really nice! Makes me want to start a photo-blog. I was searching for new incentives to take my camera for walks, and here it is. World, watch out, the shutter bug is coming back, hehe…

  29. There is a way to set a determined post to allways be the start post? like a “fistpage”

using “Pages” is not working for me….

when i use a PAGE the picture do not appear and i cant go to the real posts!

  30. Btw.. this theme is fantastic.. if i cannot set a startpost..

could you at least make a little widget arear i really need some space for some important links and info!

  31. ps: widgeror blogrol whould be usefull

  32. Amazing theme…I wanted to ask how can i put a photo on the front page? Because whenever i try to do that, WordPress doesn’t display any photo on a page (which i want to set as a static front page)…only photos on posts are displayed…

  33. Really like the idea and works fine on images stored on Flickr e.g. http://www.pana-vision.org/2008/03/11/the-elysian-fascination/. However, I started hosting my own images during March on http://www.pana-vision.org which don’t appear to be having the same effect and don’t show up in the archives section. It might be what Doug mentioned above, not sure.

  34. normally, my photos are a link to where they are located on flickr and now using this theme instead of the photos linking to flickr, they are linked to forward and backwards in the blog. any way to fix that?

also, this theme only seems to allow for an about page and no other pages. and in my about page, it will not let me include any pictures. is this normal? it is one of the main reasons i am thinking about not using your theme anymore

  35. @Allison Pluda: Yes this is normal behavior. It’s to help users navigate your site. If you’d like links to flickr, do so in the content body.

@rpok: This release of Monotone is slimmed down quite a bit. You should be able to set a static page however.

RE: Widgets: We’ll be adressing that issue and many others you have presented in the future.

  36. @noel: Wouldn’t it be possible to modify the rewriterule so that it rewrites and thumby-fies flickr images as well?

  37. Gawd this is great! I’m using it now and it’s really awesome! It rocks man! Thanks for this

  38. you didn’t include a backlink to your site. I would like to do that as a sign of gratitude for this beautiful design.
